Dear CBES Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 2017 - 2018 school year at Colonial Beach Elementary!  This is an exciting time for faculty, staff, students and the community.  It is with great excitement that we open the doors of the new elementary school, established in 2017, to greet our beloved students.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we do not take for granted.  We will treasure and care for this new school.  Our students and faculty are going to have an amazing year!

CBES is committed to partnering with parents to provide students with a quality education in a safe and welcoming school environment.  Our close-knit community allows us to know all of our students and focus on meeting individual student needs academically, socially and emotionally.

Our school-wide expectations are for students to demonstrate “Drifter Pride” daily by being productive, responsible and respectful in everything they do.  Faculty, staff and administrators are also held to these expectations.  As we enter “Year 4”, we will continue to implement our “Drifter Pride” incentives (Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports) including Positive Office Referrals, monthly class incentives and individual incentives.

This year students in grades K – 5 will continue to participate in Benchmark Literacy, a comprehensive literacy program that includes whole group and small group instruction that was adopted and first implemented during the 2015 – 2016 school year.  Students will receive small group guided reading on their instructional reading level as well as participate in grade-level lessons.  Our goal is to continuously monitor student growth in the area of reading and ensure students are making adequate progress.  I am delighted to report that our leveled-book room is completed.  Students and teachers have access to hundreds of leveled texts.

We will stay in contact with you throughout the school year using a variety of means.  You will receive monthly calendars outlining all school events as well as e-mails/auto-dialer messages.  It’s important that you inform Ms. Cox, school secretary, if your phone number, address or e-mail changes.  We want to partner with you to ensure your child reaches his/her fullest potential.  I encourage you to stay in close contact with your child’s teacher and school counselor throughout the year.  As always, I am available and can be reached at 804-224-9897 or

I look forward to a wonderful and productive school year.

With Drifter Pride,

Michele K. Coates
